What Tennis Equipment is Best for a Beginner Tennis Program?

Age-Appropriate
Tennis Equipment

Due to our wide range of Beginner Tennis programming, there is a variety of equipment types, court sizes, and racket lengths to choose from. However, thanks to the USTA’s recommendations, we can break it down for you using their Red, Orange, Green, Yellow (ROGY) program.

Curious about why this equipment stands out?

Beginner Tennis: Red Ball

Designed specifically for children around the ages of 5 to 8, red foam or felt tennis balls are larger, softer, and bounce lower, making them significantly easier to hit and control. As a result, they help 5 to 8-year-olds develop coordination and confidence while minimizing the risk of injury. In addition, smaller and lighter 19”–23” rackets are perfect for small hands, featuring oversized heads that assist children in making contact easily and avoiding fatigue. Moreover, mini courts, measuring 36 x 18 feet with a 2'9" net, provide young players with the space to move and play comfortably, thereby creating a fun learning environment.

Beginner Tennis: Orange Ball

Built for children aged 8 to 11, orange tennis balls bounce higher and move faster than red balls but are slower than green ones, making them ideal for developing skills at this age. As young players become more comfortable with these balls, they can gradually improve their coordination, timing, and confidence while progressing toward traditional yellow balls. To complement this, rackets for this age group range from 23 to 25 inches long and feature oversized heads, making it easier for kids to make solid contact with the ball. Their lightweight design ensures children can handle them comfortably without fatigue, helping them build strong tennis fundamentals. Additionally, the orange courts, measuring 60 feet long and 21–27 feet wide, are scaled down to suit kids' abilities, providing the perfect environment for skill development and enjoyment.

Beginner Tennis: Green Ball

With the intention of directly benefitting 11 to 14-year-olds, our Beginner Tennis: Green Ball programs utilize green tennis balls for players transitioning from beginner to more advanced levels, as they provide a smooth progression toward the standard yellow ball. With slightly lower compression than yellow balls, they bounce lower and slower, making it easier for 11 to 14-year-olds to control the ball and gradually build their skills. This design helps players improve coordination, timing, and confidence as they prepare for full-court play. Additionally, rackets for this age group typically range from 26 to 27 inches, offering the perfect balance of power and control. Heavier than those used by younger kids, these rackets allow players to hit with greater precision while developing stronger fundamentals. When it comes to court size, green ball tennis is played on standard full-sized courts, 78 feet long and 27 feet wide for singles. This provides the right level of challenge, encouraging players to fully engage with the game while continuing to grow their abilities in a supportive and enjoyable environment.

Beginner Tennis: Yellow Ball

Using a more standard tennis template, our Beginner Tennis: Yellow Ball programs utilize yellow tennis balls, commonly used in professional play, and are ideal for adults looking to refine their skills. With full compression providing faster bounces, these balls challenge players to sharpen their technique, athleticism, and strategy. As a result, they not only enhance coordination, timing, and precision but also contribute to a more dynamic and engaging tennis experience. Along with the right tennis balls, adults typically use 27”–29” rackets, which offer a balanced combination of power, control, and maneuverability. The heavier frames help generate more force behind each shot, improving both precision and consistency during practice sessions and competitive match play. Finally, adult tennis is played on standard full-size courts, measuring 78 feet long and 27–36 feet wide. This court size encourages players to enhance their movement, court positioning, and overall skills, ultimately pushing their game to the next level.

My daughter greatly enjoyed her first tennis lessons ever in the Beginner Tennis class. Her instructor worked so well with the children in their group. We will certainly be joining another session.
